CHENNAI: Reacting to the Supreme Court ruling on the Devinderpal Singh Bhullar case on Friday morning, Perarivalan's mother Arputhammal was confident it would not affect her son's chances of escaping the noose. Perarivalan has been convicted in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case and is facing the gallows.
While it is being interpreted that the SC ruling will have a direct bearing on the fate of the three Rajiv Gandhi assassins and four Veerappan associates who have been sentenced to death, Arputhammal told TOI, "I heard Bhullar's mercy plea was rejected.

We cannot anticipate a similar treatment in my son's case also. These are two different cases."
Asserting that she had full faith in the judicial system, she said, "They (the SC) will take the right decision and my son will come out soon, and I will live with him."
Arputhammal, who has been living in Chennai, filled with hope, and aggressively campaigning against death penalty, said, "I have been hearing positive responses from lawyers who are handling my son's case. I am very optimistic."
